Chris McWhinney: “Hydrogen is the way forward”

In conversation with CleanTech News, Chris McWhinney, CEO of Millennium Reign Energy, LLC, (MRE) discusses MRE’s plan to build the first transcontinental hydrogen highway in the U.S.A
Millennium Reign Energy is building the first Transcontinental Hydrogen Highway in the U.S.A

Millennium Reign Energy, LLC, (MRE) is a hydrogen infrastructure manufacturer and distributor, which created the patented technology, AutoARK®, an alkaline hydrogen generator that electrolyses water using electricity from solar, wind or the grid, to separate water (H2O) into its atoms of hydrogen and oxygen.

The Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A, based company is building the first transcontinental hydrogen highway in the U.S.A. The highway will be lined with approximately 27 hydrogen fueling stations from Los Angeles, California to New York City, set to be opened in late 2021 or early 2022.

Chris McWhinney, CEO of Millennium Reign Energy, LLC, revealed to CleanTech News, the grand opening of this new hydrogen highway is planned to feature hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles driving across the U.S.A, only stopping to refuel at the hydrogen fueling stations lining the highway. The hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles will make a cross country journey totaling 2,806 miles to prove that fuel-cell vehicles can be just as reliable as vehicles run on fossil fuels and more cost-effective.

The company already demonstrated its ability to complete the project by building a test hydrogen highway, the Ohio Hydrogen Triangle, which started from Dayton, Ohio, stretching to Columbus and ending at Portsmouth in 2019.

Chris McWhinney said: “By becoming the first company to build a transcontinental hydrogen highway, we will provide the wakeup call the world needs to see that hydrogen is the way forward and the key to making renewable energy dominant.”

What does the transcontinental hydrogen highway mean for renewable energy advancement in the U.S.A?
Chris McWhinney disclosed to CleanTech News, MRE plans to bring hydrogen energy to the mainstream by initially installing approximately 27 hydrogen stations across the middle of the U.S.A then branching out and installing 500 more hydrogen stations in five years, 5,000 stations in ten years and 30,000 stations in twenty years.

Twenty years from now the amount of green hydrogen produced from wind and solar pumping through the veins of this network of 30,000 Stations, filling 100 fuel cell vehicles per day at an average fill of 3 kilograms each would constitute a demand for 9,000,000 kilograms per day. (9,900 tons gaseous H2) This will create a huge demand for renewable electricity to run the electrolyzer network that will produce all that hydrogen each day from water.”

Chris McWhinney on why Hydrogen energy is the future for the transport industry
McWhinney envisions a world where hydrogen becomes the dominant alternative to fossil fuels as vehicles fuelled by hydrogen only emit harmless water vapour into the atmosphere unlike vehicles fuelled by fossil fuels, which emit toxic carbon dioxide.

McWhinney, said: “Hydrogen can be used for many things other than just putting the electrons back on the grid. Hydrogen diversifies wind and solar power to be dispatched in the transportation sector to further reduce CO2 and provide clean renewable and sustainable fuel without any sacrifice in range or refueling times.”

Worldwide, namely in Japan and Germany, companies have already installed hydrogen refueling stations, further aiding in reducing toxic greenhouse gas emissions and highlighting hydrogen as the main renewable energy alternative to fossil fuels.

Not only can the hydrogen highway be replicated worldwide, but it is well underway by many other organizations, companies, and countries. The adoption of hydrogen has accelerated over the last year like never before. If you keep track of all the projects being announced there is more demand for electrolyzers right now than the world’s companies in that business like MRE can manufacture. This spells tremendous opportunity and is one of the earmarks investment firms look for. This should drive investment needed to scale up.”

McWhinney, said.
Hydrogen was marked by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) as the potential “missing link in the transformation of the global energy system” and a “key element in 100% renewable energy systems,” in the 2018 report, Hydrogen from Renewable Power: Technology Outlook for the Energy Transition.
